Improving Roads to Reduce Erosion
Most people don't realize that deteriorating dirt roads are the single largest source of sediment in many rural streams. On Preservation Ranch and in the Gualala River watershed, this sediment chokes streams and damages the habitat of endangered steelhead trout and coho salmon.
We propose to upgrade over 90 miles of roads on the property, stormproofing them to "disconnect" them from streams and reduce road-generated sediment. During construction we will file reports with the California Department of Forestry and have roads inspected by the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board. Once upgraded the roads will be monitored regularly by a Registered Professional Forester (RPF).
